Critic's Review
Time for another Italian sub. Cheba hut last week wasn't so great; this place is right next to Smith's so I wouldn't have to make a special trip.I went to their website to see the options; they don't have a regular menu up so I had to go into their ordering system to see the prices (a trend I really hate that most restaurants have bought into). They have small options, which I like, because I don't want a 1200 calorie lunch.
Their system is a pretty good one; it gives you all the options you need to customize your sandwich. There was no option for banana peppers, which was troubling, but everything else I was able to delete or add. There's a comment field where I asked for the banana peppers.
Another positive was that when you sign up on their website you get an instant $2 discount. At $5.29 this is a much better deal. I get inflation, but food prices don't justify a 33% increase siince 2020.
I went to Smith's first, so the sandwich was ready when I got there.
I left when the bag then looked inside and didn't see anything on the side; I went back and asked about the banana peppers. "We don't have banana peppers; I can give you sweet peppers, they're similar". No they're not similar. "No Thanks".
As I was walking to my car I realized I was at a supermarket; maybe I'll buy some banana peppers so I can have them in the house.
The Kroger brand was on sale; would Vlasic really be better? For $1.99 it was a no brainer; I'd have enough for my next 10 Italian subs.
Opening it up; it's a very tight roll. Not a bad thing; in fact it can be a sign of prowess.
It seemed to have all of the correct ingredients. Although if they did put oil and vinegar on it they were pretty skimpy with it.
Banana peppers transform an Italian sandwich; with pickles mustard and mayo they add crunch and create depth of flavor in every bite, which of course is the goal of a good Italian Sub.
The only minor complaint was the commercial orange tomatoes; red is the color of true ripeness; these things are grown in a big, fake plant farm in a factory.
All in all a pretty good sandwich; good fresh meats; good pickles. They also sent me a survey and another $2 off coupon for completing it. So I'll be using that to review another location shortly.
