Critic's Review
It's been over a year since I got a pizza from Sal's. This weekend I felt like getting a pizza.I ordered over the phone without checking prices. As it turns out, they've raised prices 25% since April 2022. I'm 100% sure the price of ingredients isn't up that much. A Pizza is still $3 worth of food.
They asked if I wanted parmesan or red pepper as these are optional items.
Over $22 for this. As you can see, it looks much different than the pizza I got last time. This one had that orange thing going on. Not necessarily bad, but I don't like it when getting my rare pizza and not knowing what it's going to be like when I get it.
The crust on this pie was better than the last one; It wasn't paper thin under the cheese and thee outer edges were edible.
Note that Sal's is a no oregano shop; I sprinkled some oregano (crush it with your fingers to create a more powdery application) and a wee bit of granulated garlic before heating the slices in the oven.
Conclusion
I enjoyed this pizza but I'm concerned about consistency (and price) moving forward. $22 is too much for a 16 inch pizza to me. On the other hand, both pizzas were good and I have a pretty high bar for pizza as a former NYer..Review 3/26/23
Time for another pizza. I was at Green Valley Casino watching the NCAA tournament and this place was on the way home. I ordered a large pizza, half sausage and half pepperoni as I was leaving. They said 20 minutes; I was there in 15. I sat in the car and waiting until the 18 minute mark.I went inside and the pie was ready.
I took a look when I got home; I was going to let it sit 1/2 hour, but this is what it looked like 5 minutes from the shop:
The first couple of bites confirmed that this was the kind of pizza I haven't had in a long time. You virtually can't taste the crust; you just taste good sauce and cheese.
They also use the good sausage instead of the crumbled stuff.
On the downside, the outer crust was stiff and inedible, which is a trade off I'm willing to make.
Conclusion
Sal's pizza is good stuff; much better than the pizza I got at Lucino's last week. I'm keeping Sal's on my radar for future visits.
