Critic's Review

It's been over 2 years since getting a pizza at Sal's. I don't eat as much pizza as I used to. Today I decided to get a pie. I eat pizza on Sunday; I was going to watch Dexter: Resurrection so it would be like old times watching Siz Feet Under with Michael C Hall a lifetime ago.

I called on the phone because I don't like to pay in advance; when you order online you have to pay; and expose the fact that I don't tip for pizza. I don't want them to know I'm going to leave a $0 tip.

I eat pizza at 10pm, but I don't want o drive that late so I pick it up at about 7:30. The sun is really bad that time of day this time of year; you spend half your time shielding. your eyes from harsh sunlight.

Inside, nothing has changed. It's a small pizzaria next to a gas station. No foot traffic in this part of the shopping center. It's kind of hard to find if you're coming in from Pecos.

Sals Interior

When I got home I opened it up. Ugh. I miss Long Island pizza. This looked ok, but more a 7 than an 9 or 10.

I ordered it with extra cheese and 1/2 pepperoni. You have to order extra cheese these days to get what you used to get on a standard pie.

Sals Pizza xCheese HelpPepperoni

I tasted it and they do use good cheese and have good sauce. So it's pretty good for Las Vegas. I wasn't eating it now..

2 hours later I heated up 2 slices at 200 degrees on tin foil in my ovel. 200 degrees warms it up, melts the cheese but won't overcook or burn it in the 20 minutes it takes until you're ready for 2 more slices. I added oregano; Sal's doesnt use it. Pro Tip: crush the dry leaves between your fingers to get a fine dust. It spreads the flavor better.

Sals Slices Oregano Added

The crust was inedible. A really good pizza you can eat the crust but this was too hard.

All in all, a decent pizza. But nothing I'm getting every week the way I used to.

Sals Pizza 0723

It's been over a year since I got a pizza from Sal's. This weekend I felt like getting a pizza.

I ordered over the phone without checking prices. As it turns out, they've raised prices 25% since April 2022. I'm 100% sure the price of ingredients isn't up that much. A Pizza is still $3 worth of food.

They asked if I wanted parmesan or red pepper as these are optional items.

Sals Sausage Pizza 0723

Over $22 for this. As you can see, it looks much different than the pizza I got last time. This one had that orange thing going on. Not necessarily bad, but I don't like it when getting my rare pizza and not knowing what it's going to be like when I get it.

The crust on this pie was better than the last one; It wasn't paper thin under the cheese and thee outer edges were edible.

Sals Slices

Note that Sal's is a no oregano shop; I sprinkled some oregano (crush it with your fingers to create a more powdery application) and a wee bit of granulated garlic before heating the slices in the oven.

Conclusion

I enjoyed this pizza but I'm concerned about consistency (and price) moving forward. $22 is too much for a 16 inch pizza to me. On the other hand, both pizzas were good and I have a pretty high bar for pizza as a former NYer..

Review 3/26/23

Time for another pizza. I was at Green Valley Casino watching the NCAA tournament and this place was on the way home. I ordered a large pizza, half sausage and half pepperoni as I was leaving. They said 20 minutes; I was there in 15. I sat in the car and waiting until the 18 minute mark.

Sals Pizza Inside

I went inside and the pie was ready.

I took a look when I got home; I was going to let it sit 1/2 hour, but this is what it looked like 5 minutes from the shop:

Sals Large Pizza

The first couple of bites confirmed that this was the kind of pizza I haven't had in a long time. You virtually can't taste the crust; you just taste good sauce and cheese.

Sals Pizza Close

They also use the good sausage instead of the crumbled stuff.

On the downside, the outer crust was stiff and inedible, which is a trade off I'm willing to make.

Conclusion

Sal's pizza is good stuff; much better than the pizza I got at Lucino's last week. I'm keeping Sal's on my radar for future visits.
