I'd had some pretty good fish and chips at the Codfather,, so I wondered how Ramsay's measured up. The last time I was here about a year ago, the line was out the door.No line today. In fact it was surprisingly sparse on such a nice day.
You can get fish and chips or shrimp, lobster, sausage or chicken; all with Ramsay's signature batter. I was here for the fish.
It's pretty much an assembly line operation; batter the stuff and put it in the fryer.
There are a few seats for inside dining, but it isn't very appealing;. I wasn't going to eat in.
Luckily it wasn't crowded and I 2 people were just leaving outside so I got a seat. Time to take the fish out of the bag.
Nice portion with a too small boat for all the stuff. 3 pieces of battered fish and what look like very ordinary french fries.
You get a choice of 2 sauces; I got 2 tarter sauces. I don't want any other kind of sauce for battered cod.
The tartar sauce is very good. Note they have Heinz ketchup, iwhich is the only brand of ketchup worth eating.
While the fish looked nice and flakey, it was actually mushy. This could be because the fish was frozen, or it wasn't dried off enough.
All 3 pieces of fish were mushy, so my guess is that it was frozen and not fully thawed and patted dry. Not great for a $20 dish.
The 3rd piece the batter was stiffer and more crispy, but the fish inside was still mushy.
Cod doesn't have much taste, which is why you salt it and douse it with tarter sauce. It wasn't a bad meal, but it's nothing I would consider having again.
The fries were just how they looked; like ordinary fries. I had a couple but decided they weren't worth the carbs.
"Restaurants" by so-called celebrity chefs rarely impress me, because most of personalities and not great chefs. When I was a kid, Arthur Treacher's was a treat, and nobody ever ordered this in a restaurant. While Ramsay seem to have a pretty good recipe for batter, the fish is either frozen or poorly handled, resulting in a sub-par product.
I can't recommend this place based on what I had here today.
